NASHVILLE, Tenn. — State Representative Kelly Keisling (R-Byrdstown) announced today that Pickett County and Scott County have been awarded Tennessee Historic Development Grants totaling nearly $750,000 for the preservation of their historic courthouses.
Pickett County will receive $500,000 and Scott County will receive $249,375 through the competitive program administered by the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development (TNECD) in partnership with the Tennessee Historical Commission (THC).
"I am thrilled that Pickett and Scott Counties have been selected for this important investment," said Rep. Keisling. "Our historic courthouses are more than government buildings. They are the heart of our communities and living monuments to the generations who built the Upper Cumberland. I thank TNECD Commissioner Stuart McWhorter and the Tennessee Historical Commission for their commitment to preserving rural Tennessee's heritage."
The grant program provides funding of up to $500,000 to distressed and at-risk counties for the rehabilitation of courthouses listed on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. Applications were evaluated based on community need, project need, and project impact, with all proposed work required to meet the Secretary of Interior Standards for Rehabilitation.
"Tennessee is home to some of the nation's most beautiful and historically significant courthouses, and we are proud to announce additional funding today that will support their continued revitalization," said Deputy Governor and TNECD Commissioner Stuart C. McWhorter. "We look forward to seeing how these investments strengthen local communities and drive long-term growth and prosperity statewide."
